Event Description:

A FIVE WEEK COURSE MEETING 6:30PM-9:00PM ON MARCH 17,24,31, APRIL 7 AND 14
What we plant around our homes can improve our community’s air and water purity, reduce flooding, and even reduce our use of electricity for heating and cooling. Conventional landscaping practices often ignore these practical applications. The Landscape for Life program shows you how to work with nature to create a functional landscape that is also beautiful and cost-effective.
What You Will Learn
The educational series is comprised of five classes that examine the role of soils, water, vegetation and materials in sustainable landscape design. Some concepts we’ll explore are:
• How to work with our native soils to create successful landscapes.
• How to use water from your downspouts effectively (and legally).
• Use native plants to attract birds, bees and butterflies.
• Plant trees, shrubs and vines to cool your home in summer and block cold winds in winter.
• Strategies for reducing, reusing and recycling yard waste to keep it out of the landfill.
Each course is designed to last up to three hours and uses a combination of instructor-led presentations, class discussions, exercises and field trips to investigate each topic.
What You’ll Take Home
You won’t just learn about sustainable landscaping, you will apply what you learn to your own landscape! You’ll start with creating a base map of your home and yard. Then, each week you will build upon the base map by applying the concepts you learned in that session. At the end of the course you will have a comprehensive plan that you can implement at your own pace to make your landscape beautiful and functional. The Landscape for Life workbook will be provided.
