Established in 1905, the Forest Service is an agency of the US Department of Agriculture. National forests and grasslands encompass 193 million acres of land.  The Rocky Mountain Region of the US Forest Service manages more than 22 million acres of national forest and grasslands throughout Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming.

These forests and grasslands offer many different types of world-class recreational opportunities year-round, including skiing, hiking, camping, nature viewing, fishing, mountain biking and climbing.  The agency is dedicated to caring for the land and serving people.  Gifford Pinchot, the first Chief of the Forest Service, summed up the mission  ---“to provide the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of people in the long run.”
