The festival promises to be a special event! Spring migration in the Colorado Rocky Mountains is often full of surprises. El Paso County, where the short-grass prairies rise to meet the majestic top of Pikes Peak, has much to offer.

Event Description:

The Pikes Peak Chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) is hosting M. U. L. E. Y. Day at the Rocky Mountain Roosters facilities (North of Calhan) on Saturday June 17th, 2017. The MDF is a charitable non-profit 501(c) (03) wildlife conservation organization. M. U. L. E. Y. (Mindful, Understanding, Legal and Ethical Youth) is a MDF shooting sport and wildlife conservation program oriented to youth. The program’s mission statement is: To safely introduce youth to shooting sports, ensuring the sports continued growth. The two main tenets of the M. U. L. E. Y. Program are:

Escorting adult meal: $5.00. Bratwurst, hotdogs, chips, salad, cookies, and soft drinks. Bring sun screen.

Location Details: FROM COLORADO SPRINGS: East on Hwy 24 to Calhan. North on Calhan Highway which is one of the last streets in town. (There is a sign that points to the airport, this is the road!) Drive 7 1/2 miles, you'll come off pavement and your next left will be Road 78. Turn left and drive 3/4 mile to the entrance of the club. FROM DENVER: South on I-25 to the Founders Parkway exit just north of Castle Rock. (This is where the Factory Outlet stores are) East on the parkway to the intersection of Hwy 86. Continue east on Hwy 86 past the town of Kiowa 8 1/2 miles and you'll see a sign that points to Calhan, this is Road 77. Drive south on Road 77 to the "T" intersection, turn left on Road 94 and follow it around and it turns into Road 81. Continue south on Road 81 to Road 78, turn right and we are at the bottom of the hill. (About 10 miles from Hwy 86.)

Standley Lake has partnered with Walnut Creek (formerly known as Heritage) Golf Course to bring you this one of a kind program: Beginning and expert birders are invited to explore the designated Audubon Sanctuary at Walnut Creek Golf Course in search of their resident and migratory birds! Learn about birding, bird identification, and how the golf course is protecting our avian friends. Some binoculars are available or bring your owns. We highly encourage you to bring sunscreen and water. Children must be accompanied by adults.

Nocturnal and crepuscular animals have different features and behaviors to help them be active at night. For this popular program, we will learn about snakes, bats, owls, insects, and other creatures that are active at night. We will bring an owl and a few other creepy-crawly critters to help show off their amazing adaptations!

You’ll get to do things such as touching a heron’s nest and getting the chance to possibly see the lakes resident Bald Eagles/eaglets from a spotting scope! Hike with us, an easy mile, to explore the lakes many birds and their daily behavior as well. Dress appropriately. Bring sunscreen and water. Ages 12 and up.
