Friends and family of Tyler Valencia will one again be gathering at the Durango Skate Park to honor his memory and raise some money for a local charity. Known as "Tear it up for Tyler," the 8th annual event starts at 10 a.m. Sat., June 13.

Tyler, who was killed in a car accident in the winter of 2006 at the age of 16, was a strong advocate for a new skate park. However, he died mere months before the new park opened. He is survived by his parents, sister and brother, all organizers of the Tear it Up event.

This year's event is sponsored by The Boarding Haus and City of Durango and subsists solely on this support and donations from the community. Since its inception, the comp has grown considerably, with categories in bowl, street and vert. It is open to all ability levels.
