Resolve to Get Outdoors More!

Many people make New Year’s resolutions to lose weight, get in shape or be healthier. Sometimes these resolutions work and other times they are forgotten. But what about a resolution that was fun and good for you? Here are the top 3 reasons why a resolution to get outdoors can stick with you.

  1. It is easy! Getting outside more can certainly mean taking up a new hobby or activity but it doesn’t have to. Resolve to spend your lunch break on a walk, ride your bike with your kids over the weekend, even walking to do errands will get you outside more often. Interested in making it more fun? Learn a new sport or try a new winter activity. Either way, taking simple steps can make keeping your resolution a snap!
  2. It will make you happier! Winter can be an especially tough season that often leads to depression from being indoors more. Getting outdoors can combat those feelings. Spending time outside helps relieve stress and recharge your mind. Breathing fresh and being active helps boost energy levels and can improve your mood.
  3. It will make you healthier! Just soaking up the sun can improve your health. Sunlight gives us valuable Vitamin D which helps boost our immune system. Getting outside also motivates us to move. Being more active will help maintain a healthy weight, heart and muscles. Exercising and moving outdoors can also lead to a better night’s sleep which helps recharge our bodies.

Spending more time outside is sure to be a fun and rewarding experience! For more ideas on what to do outside or where to go, visit the activities section of www.GetOutdoorsColorado.org. The Colorado Parks & Recreation Association can also help connect you to your local park and recreation agency. Visit www.cpra-web.org to learn more. This year, resolve to get outdoors more and enjoy a happier and healthier 2014!
