The Pikes Peak Chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) is hosting M. U. L. E. Y. Kids’ Day at the Rocky Mountain Roosters facilities near Calhan, Colorado on Saturday May 10th, 2014 (9:00 - 3:00).
The MDF is a charitable non-profit 501(c) (03) wildlife conservation organization. M. U. L. E. Y. (Mindful, Understanding, Legal and Ethical Youth) is a MDF shooting sport and wildlife conservation program oriented to youth. The program’s mission statement is: To safely introduce youth to shooting sports, ensuring the sports continued growth. The two main tenets of the M.U.L.E.Y. Program are:
1) The safe introduction of youth into shooting sports.
2) Educating youth on the importance of wildlife conservation.
We hosted a like event last year in May. The event was highly successful as the result of the hard work of over 50 volunteers from numerous wildlife conservation organizations. Almost 300 guests to include 174 kids were in attendance. Shooting events included a Laser Range (hunting ethics), a Shotgun Range, a Black Powder Range, a BB Gun Range, an Archery Range, and a .22 Rifle Range. A gun safety theme of “ACTT” (Assume it is loaded, Control the muzzle, Trigger finger, & Target and beyond) was immersed into the shooting events.
Other activities included Deer Biology/Wildlife Conservation classes, Radio Telemetry classes, Operation Game Thief Trailer, Llama Packing orientations, Field Dressing/Cape Care classes, and Cowboy Action Shooting demonstrations.
New activities this year will include: Duck calling, Turkey calling, fly tying demonstration, & fly casting.
